Pacific Planholders Unite and Blog!

April 23, 2005

I ran across this entry on the PCIJ blog about Pacific Plan holders who have organized themselves and set up a blog in the process called Pacific Plans - Broken Dreams. They’ve complained about the lack of media coverage and have revealed GMA’s close relationship with Ambassador Yuchengco.

For me, this development tells us a few things: First and foremost, people don’t set up websites anymore. They blog. With a variety of tools and free options out there, blogging is the easiest and fastest mode to getting yourself published on-line.

Second, blogs can be used as a focal point for thousands of users with a cause. This virtual tool might be able to make things happen in real space — in much the same way SMS forced a sitting President from office. But I noticed that the Pacific Plans blog is run by people calling themselves PEP and PEP349 thereby raising the possibility that these were the same folks who participated in the Pepsi 349 issue some years back. How unfortunate to have bought a softdrink bottle with a 349 tansan and an educational plan from Pacific Plans.

Third, this experience will inform us if blogs can become a way to get mindshare in traditional media. Will the newspapers follow this blog and make reports on that basis? Of course, the anonymous nature of this particular blog might raise concerns with journalists who have a healthy fear of kuryente. So, it might just be something that will lose relevance. After all, anonymity doesn’t build up credibility. If you want people to listen, you have to identify yourself.

All in all, I’m happy about this. I’ve always believed more people should blog for all sorts of reasons from the idiotic, to the political, to the sublime. I want to see blogs have a positive social impact in our country. With the elections 2 years away, we might just see blogging and bloggers take a more active political role as well — shaping opinion and helping us make our choices. So, to those unfortunate Pacific Plan folks, I salute you. Mabuhay kayo!

Thank you for citing our work and putting a link back to our website.

In a country with totally untrustworthy news media, we are more trusted than any other source of information. For the record, although our identities are unknown to the general public, the facts we present are easily verifiable and our constituent base of planholders is very visible.

Several thousand planholders update themselves through our blog hourly. Credibility and trustworthiness has long been established.

Sincerely,
PEP349, PEP Coalition

I hope they can attend the iblog event. They can be a good example of consumer vigilance demonstrated through blogs.

the Pacific Plans debacle is a story of impropriety and lack of sensitivity to customers. this shows why the yuchengcos do not deserve out trust and faith as a financial institution.

I'm one of the parent that is greatly affected by these PEP/CAP fiasco. My daughter is having a CAP college plan which she's suppose to use for school year 2006 while my son is having a PEP high school plan which he is suppose to use by year 2008. With what is happening now, are we just holding a piece of paper? while our hard earned money helps the owner of these pre-need companies leads a life of rich and shameless. I'm an OFW and I saved this hard earned money to prepare my childrens future but this is being taken away from us.

I don't buy the excuse YGC uses regarding responsibility to their shareholders and family. I'm a small business owner. Part of starting a business is knowing that you may lose money. Businesses can't just decide not to pay creditors if by doing so, the business would incur a loss. My father-in-law sold the house we lived in to pay off a bank loan made by the family business bec he believed in the integrity of our name, even if our name is not even well known like the Yuchengcos.

[10] "At his age, Amb. Yuchengco must be concerned less about money than his legacy."

I would be hard-pressed to agree with your statement, but all right, maybe. But what about the other Yuchengcos in his family?

JJ,
People who try to pull a fast one over others should watch out. Acts of God are not a rarity these days. Being a doctor, stranger but serendipitous things happen in our profession. So for those who believe that they are in the right and that WE, planholders should get only what they dole out and not what they promised, they better watch out. Its bad to wish ill of others, but in these trying times, people running Pacific Plans deserve a one way ticket to KARMALAND. Only God knows, sees and acts!

dear pacific plan holders and bloggers,

I hold 3 Pacific Educational Plans

your comments would be highly appreciated

[1] I am also a parent affected by Pacific Plans. My eldest son should have availed of the college educ plan by now. How can we join the PEP Coalition and get updated about what is going on with the case. I do not know about blogging but if the updates can be sent through my email, that would be great.

I think it is unfair to relate PEP349 with the Pepsi 349 tansan fiasco. Pacific Plans extensively sold its product with the assurance that they would comply with their obligations as stated in the contract, currency crisis or not. If recent events caused the predicament they are in now, well, as a business with a large group of sister companies, they should shoulder the expenses incurred using the resources of their sister companies. Will you cut-off a family member and disown it when they go astray? Or will you support and nurture them when they are sick until they get well again? Delicadeza dictates that they will have to lose money until such a time when all of their promises have been settled. Then can they only return to profitability. This is what is lacking in our laws. Take a look at Philippine Airlines. The sick dog of asia has made a comeback of sorts because Lucio Tan used the resources available to him via his other companies to support the ailing flag carrier. Pepsi 349 on the other hand was a gambling fiasco brought about by the misprint or error of the winning numbers. Here you knew that you may or may not win the big prize.

Did you know that the forum section has been taken down from the website of the pepcoalition? Its a sad day for th many people who have come to rely on the forum section to air their sentiments about the company that shortchanged them. Apparently, there is talk the Yuchengcos are scouring the forum for further material to throw at the parents they sued for libel.

What do you think about this development and what it bodes for Pinoy bloggers?

for more info on PEP(Parents Enabling Parents Coalitions, Inc.pls. check the http://www.pepcoaltion.com. I hope Amb. Yuchengco will value integrity, honesty, trustworthiness rather than money, after all, w/ the financial statements they submitted to SEC, it show the PPI is liquid and solvent, and they shld. know how to honor their contractual obligations w/c is stated in their contract that "No matter what the cost, the planholders is ASSURED the company will pay the education of their child"

I only suspected because there’s no more office in Iligan City to verify with. I’ll appreciate any info of a contact person hat you can provide.

Can anybody help us about my son’s plan which we have not used since he entered college a year ago?

Posted by August R Aquino at September 1, 2008, 1:04 pm

Someone came to me claiming she is a third party representative of Pacific Plans. She said their group is buying our educ plans at 50% of the amount we originally paid for these plans. This amount is much lower than the one offered by Pacific in September. Will anyone please enlighten me on this? Is this one scam again? My daughter will be availing of her fixed-value plan next year. Does this prove that even the fixed value plan holders are victims, too?
